Minimum Qualifications
Requires one of the following:
Bachelor's degree with a major in legal assistance or pre-law.
OR
Completion of any bachelor's degree and one of the following: a one or two-year legal assistance program, two years of legal research analysis work experience, or Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) designation.
OR
Completion of a one or two-year legal assistance program, 5 years of legal research analysis experience, and Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) designation.
If no qualified applicants are found, we will consider under filling as a Legal Assistant I (0701), with a salary hiring range of $2759 to $4599 per month. Minimum qualifications require completion of two years of college in pre-law or legal assistance and two years of legal research analysis work experience.

Summary of Work
The Legal Assistant II reports to the attorney responsible for administrative oversight for the Williston Public Defender Office which provides for the delivery of state-funded legal counsel services for indigent defense within the State of North Dakota. This position is responsible for assisting the attorneys in the delivery of legal services.
Responsibilities include:
Identify and research legal issues.
Review and draft legal documents including motions, briefs, orders, discovery requests, and other documents.
Assist attorneys with hearing preparation by summarizing case files, contacting parties, conducting investigations, and ensuring that necessary documents are prepared and filed.
Respond to inquiries for legal information through verbal and written means.
Communicate with attorneys, clients, defendants, witnesses, and the general public; serve as liaison between office and clients, witnesses, court personnel, and public and private parties.
Provide assistance with conflict cases in other jurisdictions as necessary which may require some travel.
Performs other duties as necessary and/or assigned.
